| Born in Moscow in 1971, Andrei Uvarov entered the Moscow Choreographic Academy at the age of ten. At the Academy he studied under Alexander Bondarenko. Upon graduation in 1989 he joined the Bolshoi Ballet. While dancing with the Bolshoi he also continued his training at the Moscow Choreographic Institute until 1995. At the Bolshoi he has been working with reputed teachers like Nikolai Simachev, Nikolai Fadeyechev, and Boris Akimov. Noted from the very beginning of his career at the Bolshoi as much for his physical gifts and stature, as for the qualities of his dancing style, allying a soaring high leap with a fluent and subtle way of phrasing, Andrei Uvarov became one of the leading male dancers of the Bolshoi company in the nineties. During the ill-fated Bolshoi Ballet stint at London's Albert Hall in the Winter of 1993, Uvarov was singled out by the English critics as a revelation. Tall but with the proper weight, a beautiful long line and a gentle aristocratic presence, Uvarov is every inch a danseur noble and the ideal incarnation for the many princely roles of the traditional Russian repertoire. Andrei Uvarov is a recipient of the Benois de la danse in 1993 for his performance as Prince Siegfried in Yuri Grigorovich's staging of Swan Lake. He won a Gold Medal at the 7th International Ballet Competition of Osaka in 1995. In 2001 Uvarov was awarded the title of People's Artist of Russia. Andrei Uvarov has been a partner to many of the distinguished ballerinas at the Bolshoi (among others Nadezhda Pavlova, Nina Semizorova, Nina Ananiashvili, Galina Stepanenko, Nadezhda Gracheva, Anna Antonicheva and Svetlana Zakharova), has been touring worldwide with that company and frequently performs as a guest artist on various stages Copito | |
